The School of Medicine had operating income of $988.6 million in 2008. A total of $511.6 million was awarded insponsored research agreements, of which $442.1 million was received and spent during the fiscal year. The school ranked fifth among medical schools receiving research funding from the NIH in 2008 and first in NIH grants per faculty member. Salaries and benefits for faculty, fellows, and staff totaled 64 percent of expenditures.
